Chalcedony Rose

19.7 x 14.5 cm

Rare white and yellow chalcedony are used to depict this rose. As in wood marquetry, some parts of this stone can be heated up around the edges to create a ‘burnt’ perspective.

The burning technique used on yellow chalcedony (calcedonio giallo) speedily recreates the volcanic processes it went through millions of years ago. Applying the correct amount of heat steadily over a flame is vitally important so as not to crack the stone and to get the correct amount of shading needed.
