Inspired by the sight of tui birds and kowhai trees seen in New Zealand, the client commissioned this piece to remind her of the trip. These colourful birds lend themselves well to being reproduced in stone. Leaves here were individually inlaid for a delicate and precise result.

Green bowenite was used for the tui birds’ heads as well as the border. Native to New Zealand, it is known locally there as ‘puonamu’. Although it is a very hard stone to work with, once it is polished it has a wonderful life to it.

“We are absolutely delighted with the pieces of pietra dura we commissioned Thomas to make. He is a superb craftsman and we highly recommend him.”
